The Role of Dredge Pumps in Australia’s Mining Industry

The Role of Dredge Pumps in Australia’s Mining Industry

Australia’s mining exports is one of many industries relying heavily on the stability of coastal infrastructure such as ports, terminals and transport corridors that connect mines to global markets. As coastal erosion, sedimentation and extreme weather events increase, maintaining these assets has become a strategic priority. Central to this effort are high performance dredge pumps, which support reclamation and dredging works that protect and preserve essential infrastructure.

KSB’s GIW® range of dredge pumps is widely used in applications where durability, reliability and high throughput are critical. These pumps are built to handle abrasive slurries in harsh environments, making them well suited to coastal protection, tailings transport and desedimentation activities linked to mining operations.

Why Beach Reclamation Matters to Mining

Beach reclamation, the process of restoring eroded shorelines by pumping dredged sand onto beaches, is more than a coastal management tool. For Australia’s mining industry, it is a vital strategy to protect infrastructure.

Many major mining hubs such as those in the Pilbara, Bowen Basin and Upper Spencer Gulf rely on ports and marine facilities to move product to market. If these assets are compromised by erosion, storm damage or sediment build up, the impact can ripple across supply chains.

Projects such as channel deepening, berth maintenance and shoreline stabilisation are therefore essential to safeguarding port accessibility, extending infrastructure life and reducing weather related disruptions.

In recent years, coastal restoration has also gained traction around infrastructure corridors and mine adjacent developments, especially where rail or road access runs close to the waterline.

GIW® Dredge Pumps Built for Harsh Australian Conditions

KSB’s GIW® dredge pumps are engineered for high performance in extreme environments. They are designed to move large volumes of abrasive material such as sand, silt and gravel with minimal wear and maximum efficiency.

Key benefits include:

  • High wear resistance: GIW® pumps are constructed from white iron alloys and designed to withstand continuous abrasive loading.
  • Hydraulic efficiency: Advanced impeller designs reduce energy consumption and improve slurry handling.
  • System versatility: Available for cutter suction dredgers, hopper dredgers, booster stations and floating or land based pipeline systems.

These characteristics make GIW® pumps an effective choice not only for marine reclamation, but also for tailings transport, dewatering, and pit or dam desedimentation across Australian mine sites.

Supporting Critical Mining Infrastructure

Dredging is a constant requirement at bulk export terminals, where sediment build up can affect vessel access and berth availability. In ports handling iron ore, coal and mineral concentrates, regular dredging helps ensure reliability and reduce shipping delays.

On site, pumps are critical to managing tailings storage facilities, maintaining water levels in mine dams and removing sediment from ponds or channels. KSB’s GIW® LSA and LCC series pumps are used in these settings, offering excellent throughput and long service life, even under highly abrasive conditions.

Built for Maintainability and Lifecycle Value

In remote mining operations, reliability and ease of maintenance is essential. GIW® pumps are designed with these priorities in mind.

Features include:

  • Replaceable wear components to reduce downtime
  • Modular assemblies for efficient servicing
  • Access points for performance inspection and maintenance

These design elements help lower total cost of ownership by extending wear part life, improving service intervals and ensuring equipment remains productive in the field.

Local Support Backed by Global Expertise

KSB Australia provides local technical support, spare parts availability and pump performance monitoring across the full lifecycle of GIW® dredge equipment. With service centres in key mining regions, operators benefit from rapid response, expert consultation and tailored solutions for dredging and slurry transport.

As the pressure grows to future proof coastal and water infrastructure, the ability to manage abrasive flow reliably is becoming increasingly important. Mining companies are seeking proven equipment partners with both technical depth and local presence, and KSB is well positioned to deliver on both fronts.

Conclusion

From offshore ports to inland tailings dams, KSB’s GIW® dredge pumps support the resilience and functionality of mining infrastructure across Australia. With robust materials, high performance design and strong local backing, these pumps provide a dependable solution for demanding slurry applications in both coastal and site-based environments.

Ecocene is Revolutionising the Use of Nature Tech in Biodiversity Management for Mining

Ecocene is reshaping how biodiversity is monitored and managed across the mining and energy sectors. As a leading Australian nature tech company, Ecocene works with major operators including BHP, Rio Tinto, Roy Hill, Santos, Woodside and Chevron to deliver data-driven ecological insights that support informed decision-making and stronger environmental outcomes.

Rising Standards in Ecological Performance

Global frameworks, such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, are driving a shift in expectations around biodiversity accountability. Mining and energy companies are increasingly embedding ecological monitoring into operational planning and performance reporting.

“Traditional field ecology remains essential,” says Ecocene CEO Julian Kruger. “But the real step-change comes from integrating those skills with advanced nature tech. You can’t manage what you can’t monitor, and technology is helping us monitor more, faster, and with greater precision.”

Integrated Survey Capability

Ecocene’s team of botanists and zoologists combines deep field expertise with advanced technology to expand the scale, accuracy and efficiency of biodiversity surveys. This fusion of expertise and innovation is slashing the cost per unit of data and delivering richer, more comprehensive insights.

Automated Fauna Monitoring

Species monitoring has traditionally relied on manual fieldwork and expert interpretation. Ecocene now deploys automated camera traps enhanced with artificial intelligence to capture and classify thousands of images. Zoologists validate the AI outputs, ensuring accuracy while freeing up time for higher-level ecological analysis.

Acoustic Monitoring’
Acoustic Monitoring

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is another game-changer. Ecocene has deployed these autonomous sound recorders for decades, but with AI now rapidly processing weeks or months of animal calls, comprehensive species lists are compiled in record time. The latest generation of PAM devices, such as the compact, cost-effective Audiomoth, allows for widespread deployment across vast landscapes, capturing biodiversity data at an unprecedented scale.

Environmental DNA Analysis

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a recent but powerful addition to Ecocene’s toolkit. By extracting DNA traces left by animals in water or soil, eDNA surveys can detect elusive or difficult-to-sample species (invertebrates and fish) that often evade traditional methods. This approach is revolutionising baseline biodiversity assessments and ongoing monitoring, providing a non-invasive, highly sensitive means to track biodiversity.

Remote Sensing for Vegetation Mapping

Ecocene has long been a pioneer in remote sensing applications for vegetation monitoring – their early use of satellite imagery to track riparian tree species in the Pilbara set a benchmark for the industry. Today, the company is advancing deep learning models to automate plant species detection using drone and aerial imagery. Ongoing R&D into hyperspectral imaging, supported by partnerships with providers such as Pixxel and Maxar, is enabling more detailed mapping of species diversity and ecosystem change.

Ecological Data Intelligence

At the core of Ecocene’s technology offering is Ecoda, a proprietary web-based platform for environmental mapping and analytics. Ecoda integrates field and remote sensing data to track trends in key ecological assets, including remnant vegetation and rehabilitation zones. The platform supports regulatory compliance and internal reporting through clear, actionable outputs.

Ecoda will soon be complemented by Scout, a mobile field data app designed to support structured and flexible surveys and collaboration between scientists, Traditional Owners and community rangers.

Ecocene’s Ecoda Platform Combines AI-Powered Analytics, Remote Sensing and Expert Validation to Deliver Stronger and More Sustainable Environmental Outcomes

Ecocene, a leading Australian nature tech company, is transforming how mining and energy companies handle environmental data. By harnessing artificial intelligence, Ecocene empowers industry leaders to gather, interpret and apply complex ecological information – driving stronger environmental outcomes and improved project performance.

Ecocene partners with some of the world’s largest mining and energy companies, including BHP, Rio Tinto, Roy Hill, Santos, Woodside and Chevron, who all recognise the importance of accurate, actionable environmental data.

“We have continuously improved our Ecoda technology platform over the past decade to collate and interpret data, and we are delighted to share our increasingly sophisticated capabilities,” says Ecocene CEO Julian Kruger.

Ecocene has three divisions: Ecocene Expertise (ecological and geospatial services), Ecocene Funding (digital markets for nature) and Ecocene Intelligence, which centres around Ecoda (its data intelligence platform).

Our technology measures progress in a world that increasingly recognises the value of biodiversity to both the planet and the economy,” says Kruger. “It streamlines monitoring, enhances ecological decision-making, and already supports tier-one miners across Australia and internationally. The goal is to provide stronger evidence of nature’s importance through accurate measurement, with smarter tech playing a vital role in protecting biodiversity, restoring landscapes and safeguarding ecosystems.

Ecoda

The Ecoda platform transforms complex information into actionable intelligence and ensures regulatory compliance via streamlined data collection, management and reporting.

Remote Sensing Metrics

Ecoda translates remote sensing metrics to provide insights into:

  • landform stability and geometry
  • water quality
  • vegetation cover, health and structure
  • habitat quality and suitability
  • a range of biodiversity indicators, including the occurrence and abundance of flora and fauna species.

From Astron and Ecoda to Ecocene

In 2025, Astron Environmental Services and Ecoda officially became Ecocene. Founded over 40 years ago in Karratha, Astron earned a reputation for high-quality biodiversity and geospatial services. Ecoda, its technology and analytics division, specialised in transforming ecological data into automated insights and reporting. Together, they now operate as a single, unified business under the Ecocene name.

80 Permanent Specialists Across Ecology, Geospatial, Data and Software

Headquartered in Western Australia, Ecocene employs more than 80 staff members, including ecologists, geospatial analysts, data scientists, and software engineers. The company uses proprietary artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning models, some over a decade in the making, to process large-scale environmental datasets across varied landscapes.

Ecocene was the first environmental consultancy in Australia to receive a drone licence, enabling fast, comprehensive data capture from remote mining areas. As drone use expanded, the team began building AI tools to interpret the growing data stream.

Ecocene - Drone (Resized)

AI Grounded in Fieldwork and Validation

Ecocene’s AI models are trained to detect species, vegetation types, landforms and biodiversity trends across complex environments. Ongoing fieldwork and ground truthing are used to verify results and continually refine model performance.

“Our models enable monitoring of a broad spectrum of critical environmental assets and processes” says Kruger. “This empowers clients to make informed decisions and solve environmental challenges more efficiently – often at lower cost.”

Bringing Together Remote Sensing, LiDAR and On-the-Ground Knowledge

Environmental monitoring in mining typically involves multiple data sources: drone imagery, satellite data, aerial LiDAR and field surveys. Ecocene works closely with clients to ensure these inputs are accurate, consistent and useful.

“Our role is to help clients make sense of the data,” says Kruger. “We track metrics like landform slope, erosion rates, species cover and vegetation recovery. These insights help clients make better decisions about rehabilitation planning and performance reporting.”

A Shift in How Mining Approaches Rehabilitation

Kruger observes a shift in how mining leaders approach environmental responsibilities – especially when it comes to mine closure and rehabilitation.

“Emerging leaders want to be recognised as good stewards of the land,” he says. “We’re seeing more focus on striking a careful balance between extraction and biodiversity outcomes. In future, I expect to see companies appointing Chief Nature Officers and heads of biodiversity working alongside CFOs and legal teams to manage nature-related risks.”

“Greater volumes of high-quality data are helping us make more informed decisions. With remote sensing and AI, we can better measure and communicate the value of nature. For much of the past century, nature has been treated as an unlimited, cost-free asset – essentially invisible on balance sheets. That perception is shifting, driven by improved data and growing recognition that healthy ecosystems are fundamental to economic resilience.”

Drawing on decades of experience in ecological monitoring and mine rehabilitation – from Pilbara spinifex grasslands and Victorian wetlands to mangroves in South America and jungles in West Africa – Ecocene applies its deep ecological knowledge to support mine rehabilitation projects across Australia and around the world.

“The data and technology are already here – we can rebuild the earth’s ecosystems,” he says. “Remote sensing, AI and continuous learning models are opening new possibilities for biodiversity management and mine site rehabilitation. Australia is setting the benchmark for responsible resource development, and we see Ecocene – and our Ecoda technology – playing a key role in advancing that global leadership.”

Advancements in Slurry Pump Technology - Enhancing Monitoring and Maintenance with GIW® SLYsight and RAMSL

Together, GIW® SLYsight and RAMSL represent significant advancements in pump technology, making slurry pump monitoring and maintenance more efficient and less burdensome.

GIW® SLYsight: Real-Time Insights into Pump Health

Traditionally, monitoring the condition of slurry pumps has been a challenge. Operators typically see the pumps at the beginning of their life when they are new and at the end when they are worn out, leaving a significant gap filled with guesswork. SLYsight changes this by offering daily insights into the pump’s condition, allowing operators to monitor critical aspects such as internal clearances, which are crucial for managing wear.

With SLYsight, operators can now observe the pump’s performance on a daily basis, uncovering surprising insights that were previously hidden. This real-time visibility helps KSB, and its customers better understand how pumps are operating, leading to more informed maintenance decisions and improved pump longevity.

GIW® RAMSL: Simplifying Maintenance with Automation

GIW® RAMSL is a mechanized system designed to simplify the adjustment of the impeller nose clearance—the gap between the suction liner and the impeller. This clearance is vital for maintaining optimal wear performance.

Traditionally, adjusting this clearance required a team of people with hydraulic wrenches, making it a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. With RAMSL, this adjustment can now be made with the push of a button, leveraging the power of computer automation to track and actuate the necessary changes. This not only saves time but also reduces the physical labor involved, making maintenance more efficient and less burdensome.

Embracing the Future of Pump Technology

At KSB, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of pump technology.  SLYsight and RAMSL represent our dedication to innovation, providing our customers with the tools they need to maintain their equipment more effectively and efficiently. By embracing these advanced technologies, we are helping to shape the future of pump monitoring and maintenance.

Designed for dependability in tough conditions, the Miller Big Blue 600X Duo Air Pak 50Hz with ArcReach brings next-level efficiency, safety, and adaptability to Australia’s mining industry.

Australian mining’s ultimate all-in-one welding powerhouse

Vast distances, harsh environmental conditions, high stakes – these are just some of the challenges faced by Australian mining professionals every day. In remote mining sites, equipment failures demand rapid, reliable solutions – yet with limited access to stable power sources and support facilities, even basic repairs can become complex and costly.

This highlights the need for versatile, self-sufficient equipment that can withstand Australia’s rugged terrain and keep mining operations running smoothly. And it’s in response to these requirements that Miller has developed the Big Blue 600X® Duo Air Pak™ 50Hz with ArcReach® Technology, an advanced engine-driven welder engineered to tackle some of the industry’s most challenging requirements.

Designed to address critical site needs including maintenance, pipe welding, and emergency repairs, combined with improved compliance with local standards, the Big Blue 600X represents a compelling all-in-one solution for on-site welding in Australian mines.

As Fuhai Liu, Product and Sales Manager – Oceania at Welding Industries Australia explains: “The mining industry really values high-output machines that can get the job done fast, and this new model is built to do exactly that.

“We know operators prefer powerful, high-output machines because they can provide sufficient power to cut and weld things back together on-site more effectively. This machine certainly meets that demand.”

Power and flexibility in one package

Big-Blue-600X-Group-Image-1200x628pxMiller has designed the Big Blue 600X for versatility, delivering up to 600 amps of weld power in single-operator mode, or 300 amps per side in dual-operator mode.

This flexibility enables two welders to work simultaneously without sacrificing power or efficiency, making the machine a powerful solution for a variety of projects.

There’s also another option to plug in an additional inverter welder allowing operators to weld up to 200 Amps each.

“This configuration allows operators to switch seamlessly between single and dual-operator modes,” says Liu.

The Big Blue 600X supports a range of processes, including stick, MIG, flux-cored, and air carbon arc gouging.

It offers the most powerful welding with 50Hz auxiliary power outputs, delivering up to 600 Amps of weld power, 18,000 watts of continuous generator power, 45 CFM of air output and true heavy gouging capabilities for the most demanding jobs.

Plus, it provides the option to unlock heating capabilities when you pair the Big Blue® 600X Duo Air Pak™ with an ArcReach® heater.

“It’s a true all-in-one powerhouse,” Liu says, “It’s capable of handling a wide range of tasks on-site or in the field, from welding and cutting to powering tools.

According to Welding Industries of Australia’s Market Development Manager Mathew Hefferan, local compliance is also a key point of focus, with the Big Blue 600X developed to meet Australian 50Hz electrical standards, aligning with local mine site regulations.

“The compliance aspect is critical,” he says. “With this machine, there’s no worry about compatibility issues when powering tools or equipment.”

ArcReach is changing the game

Another highlight of the Big Blue 600X is Miller’s ArcReach technology, which enables operators to control welding parameters directly at the weld joint. This eliminates the need to go back and forth to the machine to adjust settings, which can be a significant time-saver, especially on large or elevated sites.

“For operators working at height or in confined spaces, the ArcReach system is invaluable,” Hefferan says. “It allows welders to adjust voltage and amperage directly at the weld joint without having to leave the job site, which is critical for maintaining efficiency.

“ArcReach is also a real game-changer for site safety, as it reduces the need for operators to climb up and down equipment, minimising risks associated with slips, trips, and falls.”

ArcReach technology also features cross-platform compatibility, meaning the same accessories can be used with other Miller power sources.

“You have ArcReach not only for engine drives but also for ‘plug in’ or electric machines to complete welding on-site,” Liu explains.

Another powerful feature of ArcReach is its induction heating capability, which eliminates the need for gas heating in confined spaces, further enhancing site safety.

“Imagine you’re on-site, where you might need to preheat a part before welding,” Liu says. “All you need to do is connect Miller’s ArcReach Heater to the Big Blue 600X and you’re good to go.”

“ArcReach really gives you a complete package, handling welding, cutting, and heating tasks all from one single engine driven unit.”

Going big on compliance

Safety and regulatory compliance are top priorities in mining, and the Big Blue 600X is engineered with these considerations in mind. It includes dual voltage reduction devices, reducing open-circuit voltage at the welding output studs to ensure compliance with mine site safety standards.

“Mining sites are constantly updating compliance standards,” Hefferan says. “This model’s adaptable design allows it to meet new regulations and site-specific requirements, which is essential in today’s regulatory landscape.”

In addition to its 50Hz power output, the machine is designed to meet current NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards, ensuring it adheres to stringent Australian safety requirements.

“The Big Blue 600X was built to meet the most rigorous standards,” Liu says. “The 50Hz compliance alone demonstrates Miller’s commitment to the Australian market and its unique requirements.”

Proven reliability in the field

Leading up to its official launch, the Big Blue 600X has been subjected to extensive field testing in key mining regions across New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.

“We’ve had units out in the field, undergoing trials to prove compliance and reliability in real-world working conditions,” Liu says. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, which reinforces our confidence that the Big Blue 600X can withstand Australia’s toughest conditions.”

“It’s not just about testing the unit internally and then releasing it to the industry,” Hefferan says. “This machine has proven itself in our customer’s working environments, which has been a crucial aspect of its development.”

Part of the ITW Welding Group, Welding Industries of Australia supplies and represents the Miller product range in Australia, and provides comprehensive after-sales support, ensuring customers have access to service agents nationally.

“Nationwide sales and service support has always been key for us as a business,” Hefferen says.

“Our team is highly technical and very accessible,” Liu adds. “We work closely with our customers post purchase and provide support if needed – even while operators are on a job even in remote locations.”

Unleash your potential

With the combination of Miller’s global legacy in welders and WIA’s trusted reputation in the local market, it’s no surprise the Big Blue 600X is generating considerable interest across the Australian mining industry.

“We’ve been seeing inquiries for some time from operators who are eager to get their hands on this machine,” says Hefferan.

“I think the demand we’re seeing speaks to the industry’s need for a machine like this,” Liu adds. “With its power, flexibility, and compliance features, the Big Blue 600X with ArcReach is poised to become a truly essential tool for the Australian mining industry.”

The Miller Big Blue 600X Duo Air Pak 50Hz with ArcReach is available now through Welding Industries Australia.
